Rest, You'll Need it! Jan 18, 2021

Sleep is so important. It is a time to let your body heal and re energize for the next day!

Sometimes I feel like I need to be working all the time. I am on the Lords time. Only two years. I need to be doing all I can to move His work forward. While this is true, if you work yourself to hard you can become tired and lose motivation. You could burn out. This is why rest and activities that will take your mind off the work is important. Take time to disengage. I am learning this is important.

Marcella is progressing well. We have taught her the Plan of Salvation. She agrees with what we believe.

Kathy is great. We invited her to read the intro to the Book of Mormon. She said she will also pray about what she reads.

Jesus Christ is the way. We can become like Him as we make covenants in the temple. Through Him all will be resurrected. Through Him all can choose to repent and be cleansed of sin. He is perfect. He is the example of whom we should follow. This was my focus of my talk I gave yesterday (January 17, 2021) I shall attach it below.

Take a picture in front of a temple near you and save it as the lock screen on your phone! It will increase your desire to enter it one day.

Love you all, Elder Spencer

The Temple: House of the Lord

By: Elder William Spencer

January 17, 2021 Clarksville, AR Ward

Good morning everyone! I am grateful for the opportunity to speak to you today. What an amazing ward. You are all amazing. All children of our Father in Heaven. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Elder Spencer. Literally my first name is Elder. haha. Just joking. I have enjoyed my time as a missionary so far! I was trained online from my room with nine other missionaries in their rooms. The online MTC experience for me was one of growth and spiritual nourishment. It will be a time I will always cherish. I feel greatly blessed that I was able to travel and begin service in my original assignment; the Arkansas Bentonville Mission. I grew up in Canada but was born in Provo, Utah. Because of my duo citizenship they allowed me to come and serve here. I hope my fellow missionaries, including my comp, and friend Elder Horner will be able to get to their original assignments as well. Mexico and Tahiti look out! Heavenly Father “...knoweth all things'' (2 Nephi 2: 24) He knew this virus was coming. He knew missionionaries would be reassigned. He knew hardships would occur. He comprehends it all. Sometimes it has to get worse before it gets better. “God will do something unimaginable.” (Elder Uchtdorf, God Will Do Something Unimaginable, October 2020 general conference) God has already done something unimaginable through temples. I would like to address there importance in pointing us to Jesus Christ and becoming more like Him.

The temple is the most important building in our church. In reality it is the most important building for everyone. Temples are where we become like God. The promises we make to Him inside point us to Jesus Christ who is “the way” to eternal life with Heavenly Father. (2 Nephi 31:21) We are “trying to be like Him,” (I’m trying to be like Jesus, #78, Childrens Songbook) and the ordinances we can perform in temples help us along that path.

What does it look like to try to be like Jesus?  Is it easy to become like Jesus? Is it simple to become perfect? No, brothers and sisters, it is not easy. It is not simple. It takes hard work. Trying over and over again, time and effort, diligence. When we are becoming like Jesus we are becoming like God. That is an incredible thing that will take eternity to learn how to do. It will take the Atonement of Jesus Christ to become like Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ overcame two deaths. The first was spiritual death, when He performed the Atonement: an act that only He could do. He was perfect.  Second, physical death. “When Christ died on the cross, His spirit became separated from His body. On the third day, His spirit and His body were reunited eternally, never to be separated again.” (PMG Chapter 3, L2, pg 51) Jesus Christ was resurrected. He now has a body that is perfect. “...never again subject to disease, pain or death.” (PMG Chapter 3, L2, pg 51) That is a miracle in itself. Because Jesus was resurrected we too, will be resurrected. He died so we could live again. One day, our bodies will be made perfect. To live with Heavenly Father again we need to be resurrected so we can endure “God’s presence..” (PMG Chapter 3, L2, pg 51) but we also need to be “cleansed from sin.” (PMG, Chapter 3, L2, pg 51)

Let me now share an experience I had while working on a temple that might make it easier to understand just how our work being done on the temple needed to be perfect or at least as good as we could possibly get it, in relation to how we should strive to be to enter God’s presence.

I was working on the Vancouver British Columbia Temple. We were re-constructing the landscaping on the grounds. A fence would be put up around the property along with a long sidewalk within the fence to allow for patrons to easily walk around and enjoy the beauty of the building. The time came to begin work on the sidewalk. The ground was cleared of all plants and roots, and gravel was dumped and racked out. We measured, and leveled the rock so the sidewalk would be even and straight. More rock as added, tampers came and compressed the rock to make it solid and safe. Form work was completed with cutting, more measuring, screwing and pounding in spikes. Our sidewalk was starting to take shape. Finally, the day came to pour the concrete. A huge truck came full of cement and a partner truck came to pour the mixture directly where it needed to go. The cement came and it was difficult work spreading it evenly and keeping it within the forms. We had to work fast because cement dries up quickly. Working as hard as we could we went down the whole sidewalk: pouring, smoothing, and forming. But we were not fast enough. The cement dried too quickly for us to complete our task. I was frustrated at myself. What could I have done more to complete the sidewalk before it set? Why were we not able to finish in time?

Our boss would later tell us: “You all worked so hard today. You gave it all you got and you did all that you were told to do. The cement dried quickly and our job was not completed because of that. Therefore, it will not pass the inspection check that the temple work needs to pass. Luckily we have the means and resources to try again and learn from our experience. We want the best quality of work done on His sidewalk. Tomorrow we will tear out the sidewalk we poured today.” The next day another crew member and I cut up the sidewalk.

So what does this story have to do with striving to be clean to enter God’s presence? Just like the crew had a job to build a sidewalk, we have a job to return to our Heavenly Father. We will have to work hard at it: pouring, smoothing, and forming our desires to follow Jesus. Sometimes we will be working so hard but fall short. We may harden our hearts making it impossible to finish the job. In the Book of Alma we read: READ ALMA 34: 31-32. This is the time to prepare to meet God; to perform our labours. “...do not procrastinate the day of your repentance..” (Alma 34: 33) We began to tear up the sidewalk the day after we poured it. “If not now, when?” (President Gordon B. Hinckley)

Jesus Christ “..has redeemed [you], He knows [you] by name, [you] are [His].” (Isa. 43:1) He will “.. come before you face..” and send His “..angels to bear you up.” (D&C 84:88) You can become clean through Jesus Christ.

I would like to share a story that recently occured to illustrate that He will not leave us comfortless, and how He can lift us up in our times of despair. One day, Elder Decker and I were headed out to Lamar for a teaching appointment to a dear sister whom we love. We are in a car share with Vandy, Peterson and Horner and they had the car. So we had to bike to Lamar. Five miles one way. We started off, cruising along when I noticed I couldn’t see Elder Decker any more. He was up and over the hill while I was still peddling up it. After peddling and peddling I got to the top and saw Elder Decker way down at the bottom. Weird I thought. I have biked before. I know how to shift gears properly and go up a hill. Elder Decker must just know more because he grew up in Missouri where the landscape is similar to here. However, it wasn’t just that hill. It was the whole ride that he was flying and I was far behind. I became discouraged. How can he be so far ahead of me? Why can’t my bike go any faster?! My legs were sore and I was hot from the jacket I was wearing. My shoulder bag was bumping into my leg and getting in the way of my peadling. I was frustrated and wanted to give up. But then three distinct songs with accompanying thoughts came to my head. First was “I’m Trying To be Like Jesus.” the thought of Jesus suffering for me. He felt the pain in my legs, the heat from the sun and my jacket and the annoyance of my bag. He felt it for me. Second was, “A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief.” Joseph Smith was martyred soon after this hymn was sung in Carthage Jail. He died for the church. Surely I can finish biking to deliver the message he died for. Third was “Come Come Ye Saints.” The early saints travelled across the United States in the snow and cold to Zion. They were persecuted, friendless and homeless. Many also died for the cause of Zion. Even though I feel lonely on this bike ride, they had no one. I was at least biking in good weather, while they had to go through the snow. These thoughts and songs gave me strength to endure.

I would later see from a man in this ward that my back brakes were rubbing on the tire. That is why I was going so slow. That is why I was having such a hard time

Brothers and sisters. Do not procrastinate the day of your repentance. Always hold a current temple recommend so you can enter the house of the Lord and become more like Him as you make covenants with HIm. I am so excited that a temple is being built in Bentonville. That will be an amazing day when that temple is completed. It will give me a good excuse to come back and visit!

I know temples are the houses unto the Lord. We can feel His presence inside. So go. Go up unto the mountain of the Lord. The Saviour is waiting. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

The Book of Mormon is True! Dec 14, 2020

The Work of salvation is prevalent in Clarksville area. The Lord is hastening the work. The feild is white and already to harvest. The coming of the Lord is nigh at hand, ya even at the door. We are at the hinge point. We need to prepare.

Time sure does fly! It is crazy I have already been out for almost a month! I am excited for Christmas and sure hope y'all are excited for Christmas as well!

We taught Chandler and Mac this week. They are good people. They love the Bible and Jesus Christ. Mac enjoys meeting with missionaries so much that she has been doing it for two years! However, through all the missionaries she has met with none of them have been able to answer her question: Does the Book Of Mormon have something that is required for our salvation that is not already taught in the Bible? A great question frankly. I am here to tell you it does. One way it does is this. Joseph Smith said "the Book Of Mormon is the keystone of our religion. If you take away the Book Of Mormon we have no religion." The Chruch Of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints claim to have proper authority from God to perform saving ordinances require for Salvation. So, if the Book Of Mormon is true than the Church Of Jesus Christ does have the proper authority to perform saving ordinances. If the Book Of Mormon is not true than we "have no religion."

Read the Book Of Mormon. Than ask God with a sincere and believing heart if the Book Of Mormon is true, and He will give you an answer through your mind and your heart by the Holy Ghost that it is true. (Moroni 10:4-5)

I know the Book Of Mormon is true. It testifies of Jesus Christ. This is His church. We do have a prophet on the earth today in Russel M. Nelson.

I hope you are all excited for Christmas! Love, Elder Spencer

Christmas in Clarksville! Dec 28, 2020

Merry Late Christmas my friends! I hope wherever you are you were able to spend time with those you love. We need to charish our relationships with those we love. They are what will last and have the most impact on our lives.

The missions Christmas present to all the missionaries was transfer calls on Sunday the 27th. In that call we find out if we are moving to a new area in the mission or staying in our current area. Well, Elder Decker and I are both staying in Clarksville for another six weeks!! I am glad I can still be with Elder Decker and learn from him. I also relish the chance I have to continue to work with the members and friends I have met!

One highlight from this week. I was able to participate in my first exchange (I work with another missionary from a different area while their companion works with Elder Decker in our area) I exchanged into a Spanish companionship, so I went so some Spanish lessons for a day. I recognized a few words but overall I did not comprehend much haha. That is okay. The missionary was very good at speaking Spanish. The Lord was working through him to teach His children in that area.

Jesus Christ is the reason for Christmas. But He is more tha just Christmas. He is the reason, we can return to our Heavenly Father again. "He is the way the truth and the light" (I can't remember/couldn't find the scripture referance)

You are are great! Make a difference in someone's day by smiling at them!

Singing and Dancing! Jan 11, 2021

Hello to all the people on this list! I hope everyone on this list is doing well. In fact, I hope you are having a GREAT DAY doing something exciting and energizing! Woohoo!!!

This week I had a GREAT DAY doing something exciting and energizing! I turned on some 2021 Youth Theme Music and had a dance party!! I was jumping up and down, moving my hands all around and just having a great time! Listen to uplifting music this week. You will feel so great after!!

The Book Of Mormon teaches the same Gospel principles as the Bible in a way that is easier to understand. (Even children can understand what the Book Of Mormon teaches) It teaches principles such as baptism plainly and simply. (3 Nephi 11: 23-27) Like pretty much step by step instructions on what to do.

I promise you, as a representive of Jesus Christ, that if you read, ponder, and pray about the Book Of Mormon you will feel something in your heart or think a thought in  your mind that is: The Book Of Mormon is TRUE (D&C 8:2-3) You will begin to realize you have divine and eternal potential. God is your Heavenly Father. Jesus Christ suffered and died for you. You choose for yourself the path you want to take. Your mom, dad, brother, or sister can't make the choice for you. You have to choose if you believe what you felt or thought. You choose your destiny.

The Book Of Mormon is true. I love this book. By reading its words I have come to know that I am a son of God. I can one day be like Him. I just need to Try, Try, Try.

I will send a link to a video by an Apostle of the Lord. It is his testimony of the truefullness of the Book Of Mormon. ( https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/video/additional-videos/2010-03-08-testimony-of-the-book-of-mormon?lang=eng )

Remember to sing and dance this week! Have a little personal dance party!!

Jan 2021 Here we come! Jan 4, 2021

Happy New Year everyone! It is crazy one year has already come and gone.

This week the missionaries in our stake celebrated our achievments and efforts for the LightTheWorld campaine with an extra PDay! We played basketball, spikeball, and volleyball. We had a pot luck lunch and even watched Napleon Dynamite and MacFarland USA! Both great movies and it was nice to see them again.

I had a training meeting with all the other missionaries who came in at the same time as me! It was so wonderful to see my friends from the online MTC again online! (Elder Perkins, Sister Hay, Sister Rogers, and Elder Tomlinson YOUGUYSARETHEBEST!) We recieved instruction from President Strong which is always amazing. He is the man called of God to lead this mission at this time. He asked us to find our island. Something that motivstes us to keep rowing towards even though we are tired and discouraged. Something so strong that we will continue to work and not give up and go home. I have thought about what my island/s are. Family, Jesus Christ and the people are definitently islands for me. What pushes you to keep going when you want to give up?

I am a missionary for the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I have been called of HIm to spread His Gospel to His people; my brothers and sisters. I have a work to do. He is at the head. He goes before me. He knows my name.

I love you all, Elder Spencer

p.s. I have been asked by the mission to have any letters/packages sent to my apartment address (below) instead of the mission office address. So if you would like to send me anything for the next 5 weeks at least please send it to this address. Thank you! For those of you who did send items to the mission office I will get them soon! It might just take a while :)

Arkansas: My home away from home, Dec 21, 2020

Christmas is four days away!!! Woohoo!! Time to celebrate! I hope you all will have a memorable Christmas this year to end what has been a year to remember for the rest of our lives. I hope you can be with the ones you love.

Arkansas is a state. There are people here like you and me. Some speak Spanish, some speak Marshallese. They worship on Saturdays or Sundays and most all believe in God. The Bible is their favorite book or so I have heard. What they have is shared with others who have less. Hearts are big and helping hands are many, here in the land of plenty. With smiles on their faces that would stretch for miles you wouldn't think a thing in the world could break them down. The pray to God on bended knee and thank Him for the blessings from above. With lots of Amens they unite together as brothers and sisters in one big family. Arkansas people. I am grateful for you.

Amazing folks down here.

Something from my week! Elder Decker and I felt inspired to bring some holiday cheer to residents in a retirement home here in Clarksville. With coloured pencils and paper in hand we drew some pictures and wrote some messages of gladness. We biked over to the home and wished them a Merry Christmas! Hopefully we were able to lift a burden that day.

Have a merry Christmas everyone! Stay safe and see ya next time! Love, Elder Spencer

13 mile bike ride with the brakes on! Dec 7, 2020

It is December everyone! Time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. He is the reason for the season. He is the greatest gift we could ever receive this year and every year to come. His sacrifice is infinite.

Elder Decker and I had bikes this week! We car share with the language Elders in Clarksville. So we had an appointment with a less active Sister in Lamar which is five miles of rolling hills away. In a car, no sweat. On a bike, more difficult. On a bike with brakes that are rubbing against the tire, very very difficult. My situation on this 10 mile round trip was the latter. I did not know how Elder Decker could be so far in front of me. I was peddling as hard has I could but my bike just had no glide and I was not getting anywhere. The hills did not make it any easier. I was sore and tired. To make matters worse I had a vest, and a  jacket on along with a bulky shoulder bag. To say the least I felt pretty burdened.

But as a was riding up a hill by myself (elder Decker was way ahead of me) a few songs popped into my head. "I'm Trying to be like Jesus" first came to mind. Jesus Christ carried the heaviest burden of all. He carried the sins of the world not a small shoulder bag. Than, "The Spirit of God." The pioneers had to cross mountains in snow and ice on foot, not hills in beautiful weather with a bike. Finally, "A Poor Wafaring man of Grief." Joseph Smith died for the message of the Gospel shortly after this hymn was sung. Surely I could deliver the message of the Gospel to this dear sister in Lamar. All in all, I was able to take courage and strength from these songs and I endured to the appointment. (The other three miles was to the church after our appointment. A member at the church was able to identify the brake that was rubbing and causing our great problem)

Now, I am not comparing my biking trial to the handcart companies, Joseph Smith's martyrdom, or Jesus Christs Atonement because nothing is greater than those in magnitude to suffering, but I am saying I was able to draw strength from their examples. I was able to push myself to the limit because they pushed themselves to the limit.

So when you are feeling down or that you can't go on, remember Jesus Christ felt that. He asked His burden to be taken from Him as well. But Jesus found strength in His love for YOU. He bled for YOU. He died for YOU. So this Christmas season, take five minutes to ponder about His sacrifice. He gave us the greatest gift: the Atonement.

I love you all, Elder Spencer

I just gotta quarantine! Nov 30, 2020

Hello all! Happy Thanksgiving for those of you in the United States! Sorry True North Strong and Free. No Thanksgiving in November for you. Yours was in October 🇨🇦🇨🇦

I was sick this week. No fun at all. Elder Decker and I had to isolate until I was told to go to the hospital to get checked out. Strep throat: Positive. Covid: Negative. I am so grateful I did not have Covid. The Pharmacy gave me some antibiotics for my throat! It is feeling better already. So take it from me. Stay safe. Be smart. I sometimes am still not very smart (especially with other missionaries) with being Covid safe, but just try your best!

Because we had to isolate, we got food brought to our door from ward members! Our fridge is literally full! God really does look after our temporal needs as we do His work! He is mindful of you. Your desires and dreams. He will help you.

I invite you all to visit lighttheworld.org

This website has a calendar that has activities you can do each day to help spread the Light of Christ this Christmas season. It starts tomorrow so get ready!

Love you all, Elder Spencer

I'm gonna battle, gonna fight, win or lose I'm going to be alright! Nov 23, 2020

Well this is it! I am in Arkansas!

My flights were great. All on time, and I got to meet some neat people. When I landed in Fayetteville, some missionaries picked up me and one other elder. We drove to a church where all the other new missionaries were. We met our President and his wife. We had a wonderful meal and had an orientation. That night I slept in the mission home with all the new elders.

In the morning we had a transfer loop! We all piled into vans and drove around to different churches to get dropped off and meet our trainers! I was dropped off on the first stop and I met my trainer and three other language elders in our same area. (Clarksville is where I am currently serving. It is right near Fort Smith Arkansas) My trainers name is Elder Decker! What a great guy! He is about my height and he is from Missouri! (Not too far away from his home town!) We have gotten along well together and we have had some great companion studies. We are both new to the area so we are just trying to learn about the people here and get to know the members of the Clarksville ward.

Elder Decker and I had a neat experience this week. In fact you could say it was a miracle. One evening we were driving to pick up the language Elders to bring them back to their apartment (we share a car.) While driving we received a call from a member of the ward. He asked if we could go to the hospital to give a sister a blessing. She is in her second battle with cancer and was in a lot of pain. We said "of course we could" and headed to the hospital. We arrived there and went to her room. I have never given a blessing before so Elder Decker had to pull up the format for me so I could remember. My friends, as soon as I began the spirit took over. I spoke the words that came to my mind and my eyes wept. I could feel strongly the love God had for His child. It was truly amazing. God works with His children. He knows you and is there for you.

I am enjoying my time here and I miss you all. Stay safe and remember that God is with you, even "on your left and on your right." (D and C 84:88)

Love, Elder Spencer

We are so glad your missionary arrived here in the Arkansas Bentonville Mission. Here is a picture of their arrival with President and Sister Strong. Enjoy!

God loves you! Nov 14, 2020

Another day, but not another dollar haha. Missionary work is free of cost. In fact, I pay to be on a mission. For most this makes little sense. Why would I give up two years of my life, when I could use those years to work or go to school. The answer: God is our loving Heavenly Father. We are His children.  He loves us and wants the best for us. I know this to be true and I want other people to know it too. So that is why I am a missionary.

This week, Elder Perkins and I had a wonderful time in our TRC's! We were able to have follow up lessons with everyone we taught last week. It was neat to see their progress even after only one week! It was a little sad to tell them that we won't be able to teach them again, because on Wednesday, Elder Perkins and I fly out.

As a district we had a really cool impression. In a devotional, a speaker challenged missionaries to kneel when you pray. It shows God the respect He deserves. SO as a district we took that to heart (or to knees haha.) For each prayer we had in class we would all kneel down. It was a powerful feeling. It was like we were all united and together even though we are all over the West Coast in geographical location. It was wonderful.

I know Jesus Christ lives and loves you.

See ya in Arkansas! Elder Spencer

Let it snow, snow, and TRC's! Nov 7, 2020

Hello my friends! What a great day this is! A new youth song just got released about missionary work and it is so good! Listening to it on repeat!! I will send a link out for it if you want to listen to this fantastic song.

I woke up this morning to a winter wonderland. The snow is so beautiful on the branches of the trees. The world is quiet and the snow is untouched. I love it.

MTC this week: so amazing! I learned something new everyday, like how to stay safe while using technology, how to make an effective commitment, and how to laugh. (I am just joking about that last one, but honestly, I laugh so much) Lots of smiles from all the missionaries in my district. We just can't help it. We know we have a message of happiness and joy to share to the whole world. The message of Jesus Christ. He died so we can live again. He died so we can be forgiven of the things we do wrong. We are human. We will fail, but with Jesus Christ we can try again, and again, and again.

My district: We call our district the Fire District because we light up each other with testimony and the Spirit. But this week the Fire District got burned. In the MTC we learn lessons and then practice teaching what we learn to real people! These practice appointments are called TRC's (Teaching Resource Center I think.) TRC's can be stressful, especially when you are just learning material and it is with complete strangers. I was nervous when Elder Perkins (my companion) and I had two scheduled for the week but than our teacher challenged us. A challenge that initially burned but turned into a glowing ember of joy! He challenged us to do five TRC's a week!! Ahhhhh. We were all freaking out. FIVE! He is just kidding right?!?! No he was not. Grudgingly Elder Perkins scheduled two more appointments which only put us at four, but that is beside the point. During comp study we prayed to feel love towards these people so we could find out how to best help these people. I won't go into details on each one, but I will tell you that the Spirit was felt during each lesson. Our work was not in vain.

Elder Perkins and I were able to reschedule each person for a second lesson this week! I am excited to meet with them again.

"I'm trying to be like Jesus, I'm following in His way. I'm trying to love as He did, in all that I do and say.... love one another as Jesus loves you, try to show kindness in all that you do, be gentle and loving in deed and in thought, for these are the things Jesus taught." (I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus, children's Songbook, pg. 78) Be kind today. Look for the hands you can lift up. Smile.

Jesus Christ loves you, and I love you.

Wearing a button up shirt, tie and dress pants all day actually isn't that bad! Oct 31, 2020

Hello everyone!

What a week it has been! On Tuesday, October 27th, I was set apart as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. While I am a missionary I set myself apart from the things of the world (Imagine Dragons, The Edmonton Oilers, Nacho Libre... ) and focus my attention on God and the work He needs me to do, which is to invite others to come unto Christ.

For those of you who do not know I am being trained online from my home. Normally, I would fly to Provo, Utah and train in the Missionary Training Center (MTC) with hundreds of other missionaries just like me! Because of Covid, all the training takes place over Zoom! Each missionary is assigned to a district based on the language they are learning. I am in the world's best district with nine other wonderful Elders and Sisters!! We take two classes a day as a district; one in the morning and one in the afternoon. We learn so much and I love it.

Each missionary as a companion. Someone to help you stay accountable, safe and productive. My comp. is Elder Perkins! What a guy! He has a love for this gospel and I love him already. He is from Utah, so I can relate well with him, because I was born in that state! We laugh together, pray together, and work together to bring others unto Christ.

Did I explain the MTC process well enough? Email me if you have any questions on how the process works!!

I am grateful for Jesus Christ. He lives and loves you. He knows what troubles you are going through. He will help you as you turn to Him through prayer.

Love you guys, Elder Spencer
